Qi2 Wireless Charging Explained - What It Means for Peak Design Mobile Gear

Want the inside scoop on Qi2 straight from Peak Design lead electrical engineer?

Check out this short video.

What Is Qi2 Charging?

Launched in early 2023 by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), Qi2 is the next-gen wireless charging standard, succeeding the original Qi. Taking cues from Apple’s MagSafe, Qi2 introduces magnetic alignment, ensuring perfect contact between charger and device for faster, more efficient power delivery.

Apple has already integrated Qi2 into its iPhone 15 series and retroactively enabled it via software for iPhone 12–14 models. With Android brands expected to follow, Qi2 could soon become the universal wireless charging standard—just as tech enthusiasts predicted.

Is Your Peak Design Gear Qi2-Ready?

Important: Qi2 compatibility applies only to Peak Design’s charging mounts and accessories, not phone cases. All Everyday Cases work with Qi2, but your phone’s hardware determines whether you’ll get Qi2 speeds.

To distinguish between older and newer models:

Qi1: Released before June 11, 2024 (no Qi2 logo).

Qi2: Released after that date (look for the Qi2 logo on the device).

Qi2 Charging Speeds by Device

Apple iPhones

As stated, Apple has already adopted the Qi2 standard for the iPhone 15 line, and through a software update have also enabled it on all iPhone 12-14 models.

This means those four generations all charge at 15W peak on Qi2 Peak Design charging devices, just as they would on a first-party charger. On Qi1 Peak Design charging devices, they charge at 7.5W peak.

The iPhone 11 is only capable of charging at 7.5W peak regardless of what charger you are using.

Samsung Galaxy

Samsung is also a WPC member, but has not yet adopted the Qi2 charging standard, meaning all Samsung Galaxy models which we support charge at 5W on Qi2 Peak Design charging devices.

On Qi1 Peak Design charging devices, they charge at 10W peak.

(We’ll update if Samsung adopts Qi2.)

Google Pixel

Google is also a WPC member, but has not yet adopted the Qi2 charging standard, meaning all Google Pixel models which we support charge at 5W on Qi2 Peak Design charging devices. On Qi1 Peak Design charging devices, Pixel 6-8 and Pixel 6-8 Pro models charge at 12W peak.

On Qi1 Peak Design charging devices, the Pixel 7a charges at 7.5W peak.
We will update this article in the event Google adopts the Qi2 standard.
